One of the problems with this Hugo category (which has, thank heavens, been renamed to include the crucial word "Comic" - after extraordinary struggle) is that we are not always comparing like with like. Interesting to note that this year we have two Prison Break stories, three Fantastic Voyages, and one that isn’t really sfnal at all. Latest in the excellent and entertaining series by Vaughan and Staples, though I feel a bit less enthused than by some previous volumes - most of the fun characters have now been introduced, some have been removed from the scene, and there is a bit of shuffling the pieces around the story board to get them into the right place. This missed getting on the Hugo shortlist this year by a single vote, or rather because the Puppies nominated a completely crap webcomic about zombies and 26 people nominated Saga without specifying which volume they were voting for. Having said that, volume 3 (which I enjoyed) did make it to the list and duly came second to Ms Marvel. This volume ( Read more... )

I read the first volume of this last year, when it was nominated for a Hugo, and didn't quite buy it. I thought this second volume, also Hugo-nominated, was much improved; a fairly straightforward story arc about families and conflict, with a little bit of magic and interplanetary skullduggery.
